Soup the Comic Strip by Alun Clewe
Comic strip for February 11 2024.
PANEL ONE: Erlak sits on the bench in the Mountains of the Gods. ERLAK: So... everything is working out exactly according to plan... PANEL TWO: Slightly wider view; we now see Nizini sitting next to him. ERLAK: Hey, that's kind of a first, isn't it? NIZINI: Sadly, yes. PANEL THREE: Angle on Erlak; Nizini in the foreground. ERLAK: So you really think you're going to have your soup bar? NIZINI: Oh, yes. PANEL FOUR: Front view of the two of them. ERLAK: The God of Construction and the God of Marble are helping build the place, with some help from the God of Folly. NIZINI: Why does that last one not surprise me? PANEL FIVE: Close on Erlak. ERLAK: The Goddess of Comfort is making the chairs, and the Goddess of Teak most of the rest of the furniture. PANEL SIX: Back view of the two of them. NIZINI: So how did you persuade all these gods to help you? 'm sure they're not all chipping in for free. ERLAK: Well... no, not exactly. They're doing it in return for the promise of a future favor. PANEL SEVEN: Slightly different angle from the back NIZINI: A future favor from the god of soup... ERLAK: Well, actually, from my champion. PANEL EIGHT: Closer on Nizini and Erlak (from the front) NIZINI: I see... and does your champion know about this? ERLAK: Well, no, I haven't mentioned it to him yet... but that's how this whole divine champion thing's supposed to work, isn't it? They go on missions for their patron gods... PANEL NINE: Close on Nizini NIZINI: Yes, but in return for powers and favors granted by their patrons in return. PANEL TEN: Nizini talks to Erlak, who looks thoughtful. NIZINI: What exactly have YOU done for HIM? PANEL ELEVEN: The champion, Maiz, Nezhoni, and Xaga proceed down a road. A giant bowl is in front of them, with a ribbon around it. XAGA: Should I be worried that there's a giant gift–wrapped bowl of beef stew in the road ahead of us? NEZHONI: Probably, yeah.

Didn't I already use basically this same joke on a strip in December? (Yes. Yes I did.)

Also... "in return for powers and favors granted by their patrons in return"? Gaah, clunky writing.

Also also, I once again used that hand-over-the-chin-to-indicate-thoughtfulness thing that I've commented on before. I need to stop doing that. Or at least do it a lot less and maybe confine it to a specific character or two.

Also also also, I once again had this strip up a few minutes late, which is something I'm really trying to stop doing. Aargh.
