Soup the Comic Strip by Alun Clewe
Comic strip for May 13 2024.
PANEL ONE: The champion and Maiz start to walk away, but the Spider Goddess calls after them. SPIDER GODDESS: Not so fast! PANEL TWO: The champion turns around. SPIDER GODDESS: If your patron is truly the god of soup, then...a mistake has been made. But I have only your word for that. CHAMPION: Well...isn't there a way you can check? PANEL THREE: Angle on the champion, with the Spider Goddess in front of him. SPIDER GODDESS: INDEED THERE IS. I can PROBE your connection with your god. CHAMPION: Is...is this going to hurt? PANEL FOUR: Close on the Spider Goddess. SPIDER GODDESS: Do you THINK it would hurt to have your SPIRITUAL TIES PULLED TAUT and your VERY SOUL HARROWED? PANEL FIVE: Side angle on the champion and the Spider Goddess. CHAMPION: Well, actually, I'm not completely clear on what “harrowed” means... SPIDER GODDESS: THE ANSWER IS YES. SPIDER GODDESS: A LOT.

Hm. On the one hand, harrowing is kind of a big part of farming, so it might seem odd that someone in a preindustrial society doesn't know what it is. On the other hand, not everyone in a preindustrial society is a farmer, of course, so... well, I guess we can conclude that the champion doesn't come from a farming background. Which, honestly, I guess kind of fits with the way he talks, so okay. (Actually, come to think of it, of all the characters in Soup, the champion is the one who talks the most like me. Which is a bit odd, since he's definitely not a self-insert, or a character whom I really identify with or think of in any way as an alternate version of me. That's a different character.
